my name is Anthony Daniels, I’m a 40 year old black male from Detroit Michigan and I have been incarcerated for the last 23 years. My inspiration comes from a genuine change I was sentenced to life at 18 and with that kind of sentence the only thing they care about is the check they collect from your physical. No classes are offered so if you have the kind of sentence I have you have to be ambitious and mentally strong enough to create your own education and change. Its literally guys fighting just to get a GED but due to a long sentence they are not allowed to. I want to expose to the world that real change is possible. Being judged based on a poor choice I made 23 years ago isn’t fair because since then I have found purpose which took a lot of looking. I lost a child and my mother which left me incomplete with a quick thought to give up but instead I embodied a constructivism and humbled myself. What kept me going was my first poem called “Heart Failure” I found strength in my words as well as a positive way to release my demons. So in writing I’ve created a path that allows no negatively to travel down. I saw peoples reaction to some of the things I allowed them to read and hearing them say things like” glad to know I wasn’t alone” gave me more reasons to continue and I believe words in a genuine fashion can save people. In July 2022 the Michigan Supreme court banned Mandatory Life sentences for people sentenced at the age of 18 which fits me so a second chance for me is in the making once Michigan makes it retroactive for the ones sentenced before the ruling. With that birthed a new form of hope for me and lots of others which some had completely abandoned. I am motivated by the thought of being able to be free again and physically show that while the world focuses on the many people who fear change its people like me dying to embrace it. 23 years later I’m not the boy behind the gun I’m the man behind a cause and with my many forms of writing I’ll be heard I just hoping people will listen without judgement. What I did is apart of my story so I take 100% responsibility for it without a single mistake but the way that was magnified people like me yearn that same attention for the many positive choices made after that. Thank you for taking time to get to know me and on this journey truth is my foundation and awareness is my goal not to mention I don’t wanna die misunderstood.
